What is non-medical in-home care?

Non-medical in-home care is a type of home care service that provides assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) and other tasks, but does not involve medical services. This type of care is provided by a Home Care Aid (Caregiver), usually in a home setting, often used by older adults who need help with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, cooking, and cleaning.

Receiving in-home care can be a great option for seniors by allowing them to live in their own homes for as long as possible with compassionate assistance. It can also provide relief for family members who take on the role of Caregivers and help improve the quality of life for everyone involved.

If you or someone you know is considering in-home care, here are a few things we encourage folks to do:

  1. Talk to your doctor: Your doctor can help assess your needs and recommend a qualified home care provider.

  2. Compare providers: Once you have a few home care providers in mind, call them to discuss your specific needs and find out how their agency operates. This will help you make an informed decision on selecting a provider that will meet your needs.

  3. Meet with the provider: Once you have selected a home care provider, schedule a meeting to meet with the team who will be providing you care. This gives you a chance to elaborate on your needs while getting to know the home care provider better. Most providers take this time to go over their process of providing services so be sure to ask all the questions you find necessary.

  4. Set expectations: Once you decide to start services it is important to set clear expectations with your selected provider so they can better service you. Let them know how often you'd like to schedule services for, the duration of services, and what you're most looking forward to receiving.

  5. Communicate regularly: Finally, you've chosen a home care provider you trust and are happy with the services you're receiving. Now, it's important for you to stay up-to-date by communicating regularly with your home care provider about your needs and any changes that may occur.

By doing your research and choosing a qualified provider, you can ensure that you receive the care you need to stay happy, safe, and healthy.
